Can apps see my Hidden album?
What the Hidden album does
Apple says hidden photos move to the Hidden album, and they don't appear elsewhere in Photos, such as the Library or other albums. The album is locked by default and opens with Face ID or Touch ID, and it's safest to assume your passcode opens it too. You can also take the album out of view by turning off Show Hidden Album, under Settings, Apps, Photos.
What Apple says about other apps
An app can only look at your photos if you allow it. Here's how full and limited access work. Apple's developer tools include an option called "includeHiddenAssets", which suggests an app can ask for hidden pictures. We couldn't open Apple's page for it, so we can't say when it applies. We'd treat your hidden pictures as reachable by an app that has full access to your photos.
What we couldn't confirm
- Whether the Face ID lock on the Hidden album also stands in front of other apps. Apple's pages describe the lock for the Photos app only.
- Whether turning off Show Hidden Album changes what other apps can reach. Apple describes it as hiding the album in the Photos app.
- Whether an app with only limited access can see hidden pictures.
Where we can't confirm it, we'd rather not promise it.
What you can do
- Check which apps have full access. Go to Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Photos. Change any app that doesn't need everything to limited, or turn it off.
- Leave the Hidden album locked. It protects you from someone borrowing your iPhone, which is what it's built for. Assume anyone who knows your passcode can still open it.
- For pictures that matter, use a lock of their own. A picture kept outside Photos isn't in the library other apps are given. Here's how the Hidden album and a vault compare.
- Or delete the picture, if you don't need it. That's safer than hiding it.
How FirstHour helps
FirstHour's check doesn't look in your Hidden album, so look there yourself. When you swipe up on a picture in a review to hide it, FirstHour asks Photos to move it into the Hidden album, behind Face ID in Photos.
Hiding is not locking away. For a picture you need to keep, the Vault copies it into FirstHour, behind its own pattern or PIN. Once you let iPhone remove the original, it waits in Recently Deleted for 30 days and then it's gone from Photos, so empty that to be sure. A well-chosen pattern can be much harder to guess than a 6-digit PIN, though someone watching can copy it. FirstHour can't change what other apps are allowed to see, and it can't tell you which apps have already looked.
