Do hidden photos show up in Search, widgets or Memories?
What Apple says
When you hide a photo or video, Apple says it moves to the Hidden album, and "doesn't appear anywhere else in Photos, like the Library, other albums, or even the Photos widget on your Home Screen." The Hidden album is locked by default in iOS 16 and later. You open it with Face ID or Touch ID, and it's safest to assume your passcode opens it too.
Apple's pages on hiding photos don't mention Search or Memories at all, in either direction. We couldn't find an Apple page that says hidden photos are always left out of them, so we won't promise it.
A five-minute check you can do
- Hide one harmless photo of something easy to name, such as a mug.
- Open Photos, tap the search button, and search for that word.
- Look at your Home Screen widget and your Memories and featured photos for it over the next few days.
- If it shows up, unhide it: open Collections, then Hidden under Utilities, tap View Album, unlock, touch and hold the photo and tap Unhide.
Don't test with the real picture. A photo you were trying to keep private is the wrong thing to find out about the hard way.
Two more things to know
- Hide the Hidden album itself. In Settings, tap Apps, then Photos, and turn off Show Hidden Album. Apple says hidden photos then won't be visible in the Photos app. They're still on your iPhone, and anyone who turns it back on can see them.
- Watch for iCloud. With iCloud Photos, a photo you hide on one device is hidden on your others too, but other copies, like one you sent in a chat, aren't touched.
The bigger limit
Hiding is about what shows up while you scroll. Apple describes it as keeping photos out of your Library and albums, not as encrypting them, and it's safest to assume your iPhone passcode opens the Hidden album too. If someone knows your passcode, the Hidden album isn't much of a barrier. Here's how it compares with a vault.
How FirstHour helps
A picture in FirstHour's Vault isn't in Photos at all, so it can't turn up in Photos' Search, Memories or widget. FirstHour doesn't add anything to iPhone's Spotlight search or to widgets either. Inside the Vault, search looks through names, labels and the words in your notes, and only after you unlock it with its own pattern or PIN.
Two limits. When you move a picture in, iPhone asks before removing the original from Photos. If you say no, the original stays there, and could still show up. And FirstHour doesn't check your Hidden album for private details, so look through it yourself.
Questions
Can someone find my hidden photos by searching?
They'd first have to get past your passcode. Apple's pages don't say whether Search skips hidden photos, so test it before you rely on it.
Are hidden photos in iCloud?
Yes, if iCloud Photos is on. They sync like your other photos, and are hidden on your other devices too.
